Three Generations of Townsend Camping
In August 1994 Malcolm, Barbara & Greg Johnson purchased a 14 acre tract of land in Townsend, TN with the intentions of building a family oriented campground.
This property is a level tract of land fronted by Little River and surrounded by mountain ranges. The property was part of a large farm, thus the name Big Meadow was an accurate description and adapted as the name.
"Our family has camped since 1974 and found camping to be a very enjoyable and family oriented affair. We decided in 1988 to try to purchase either an existing campground or to develop our own."
Big Meadow Family Campground was opened on May 22, 1995. The park was built by the Johnson family and continues to be operated by

In 2006 Big Meadow Family Campground was awarded Tennessee “Campground of the Year.” This is a coveted award presented annually to outstanding campgrounds by the Tennessee Association of RV Parks and Campgrounds (TNARVC).
In both 2013 and again in 2019, we received the National Campground of the Year award presented by ARVC, the National Association of RV Parks and Campgrounds.
It really is all about family here on the quiet side of the Smokies. Now in our third generation, our identical twin grandchildren, Mason and Matthew, have joined us working at Big Meadow Family Campground.
Malcolm and Barbara retired in 2026 but still visit occasionally. Campground is now Operated by 2nd Generation owner Greg Johnson, and his family assists as needed.
